POSITION SUMMARY:
The Associate Director of Policy and Government Relations will be based in Humanity United’s Washington D.C. office and will provide policy and advocacy support on the key issues that drive Humanity United’s overall strategy. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director in the implementation of policy positions and advocacy strategies on subjects related to Humanity United’s work and assist with the integration of policy and advocacy into the organization. The Associate Director will assist in the design, development and implementation of public policy strategy aligned with Humanity United’s values, mission and strategic priorities.
Essential Job Functions
To further the mission of Humanity United and working with the guidance of the Director, the Associate Director will:
Assist in driving advocacy on key strategic public policy issues
• Work with the Director to produce and implement multi-year policy and advocacy strategies
• Research, write reports and position papers for internal and external use
• Advocate on adopted policy positions
• Respond to external inquiries on policy issues including briefing policy makers and media
Represent Humanity United among Key Audiences
• Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations and individuals including NGOs, government leaders and members of civil society
• Represent Humanity United at external events such as government policy briefings and meetings of NGOs
• Provide media interviews in coordination with the Communications Team
• Prepare content for media, presentations and speeches
Provide Policy Analysis and Briefings
• Remain informed on contextual issues from government, media and academic sources
• Prepare information to be presented internally through presentations and briefings
• Coordinate responses to external policy processes
• Alert the Director to the existence of relevant policy developments
• Provide analysis and produce content for the Director
Ensure Internal Policy Consistency and Integration of Advocacy across the Organization
• Participate in internal processes to ensure advocacy is integrated across the organization
• Collaborate with other programmatic and operations functions to support organizational objectives
• Provide policy screening for Humanity United material related to key issues
• Participate in related activities as assigned
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
• Minimum of 8 years experience in public policy and or government relations required.
• Experience in the human rights fields is highly desired.
• Legal degree preferred but not required.
• Solid communication and media relations experience.
• Demonstrated self-starter, able to work independently, with experience working in entrepreneurial organizations.
• Highly versatile skills and “roll up the sleeves” attitude.
• Well organized and self-directed; politically savvy and a team player – able to share information and collaborate effectively across all functions, and with both internal and external partners.
• Demonstrated ability to produce results in a high performance environment.
• Outstanding interpersonal, communication, relationship-building and negotiation skills (i.e. ability to listen as well as persuade)
• Ability to deal effectively, diplomatically, honestly, and with sensitivity among investment partners from diverse cultural environments
• Ability to travel both domestically and internationally as needed to perform the job (10% – 20%)
