Our Focus Areas:
Humanity United
Approach
Humanity United envisions a world where the global community will respond swiftly, effectively, and without compromise as soon as the threat of mass atrocities arises. We support efforts that prevent violence and create the conditions for long-term peace and stability.
Humanity United's approach to the prevention of mass atrocities prioritizes interventions that support rule of law and good governance, that build the capacity of civil society and independent media to ensure citizen voice and transparency of information, and that facilitate international engagement and intervention when necessary.
Through this strategic framework, Humanity United seeks to strengthen the international community's ability to prevent mass atrocities while simultaneously working toward peaceful and sustainable conflict resolution in targeted regions. At present, we support work on the ground in eastern and western Africa. Our work in eastern Africa is anchored by a strong commitment to peace and security in Sudan. In the Manu River region, our central focus is Liberia's post-conflict stabilization. In addition to this geographic focus, we support broader efforts to enhance the efficacy of international organizations (such as the International Criminal Court and the African Union) to promote accountability, transitional justice, and sustainable peace in the world's most fragile regions.
Rule of Law and Governance
Rule of law and good governance are critical pre-conditions for enduring peace and security. Working directly with governments as well as with local, national, and international non-governmental organizations, Humanity United focuses on structural interventions that promote and strengthen legal and judicial systems, governance practices, and key institutions. In conflict zones, we support actors working to mitigate the violence, monitor and expose perpetrators of widespread human rights abuses, and amplify the voices of those directly affected. In post-conflict settings, our goal is to sustain important strides in peace and development, helping to prevent fragile societies from slipping back into conflict. In addition, we invest in the development of global solutions and institutions that aim to prevent conflict.
Voice and Transparency
Humanity United supports catalytic initiatives designed to amplify the voices of independent citizens working to advance peace and reconciliation in their own communities. With our partners, we seek to facilitate healthy public debate through strengthening the coverage and quality of trusted information sources, such as independent media organizations and leading civil society organizations. In conflict zones, we invest in international, national, and community-based efforts dedicated to raising the profile of marginalized groups and demanding greater responsiveness to their concerns. In post-conflict settings, we work to rebuild the political, civil, and social conditions - particularly transparency and accountability - that will pave the way for democratic development and economic prosperity.
International Engagement
Humanity United promotes efforts by the international community to stop and prevent large-scale violence through diplomatic and public pressure. We support efforts and promote policies that help governments live up to their commitment to the responsibility to protect their populations, and act when states are unable or unwilling to do so. We support conflict and post-conflict interventions aimed at restoring peace and justice to war-torn regions and building reconciliation through a variety of recovery and rehabilitation activities.
